The year 2017 was so special for us as a married couple to find out that we were going to welcome our firstborn child into this beautiful world. Like any other expecting mother, I started nesting and buying or rather hoarding a bunch of stuff for the soon-to-be-born baby.
Can't help it - Mommy wants to give the best for her child. But little did I know, after all the products I hoarded that very few actually came in handy and the rest was just clever marketing, but a waste of my precious time and hard-earned money.

It’s not what you do for your children but what you have taught them to do for themselves that will make them successful human beings ~ Ann Landers
In this post, I will be sharing the top 10 best newborn baby products to buy this year that are actually worth every penny compared to the ones to avoid purchasing altogether. I urge all new mother or soon-to-be moms to also go through my don't buy list to avoid making the same mistakes as I did but rather save every penny you can for a rainy day.
Here's the list of best newborn baby products to buy this year
i) Newborn size diapers - preferably cloth diapers. If you decide to go with disposable diapers then know this a newborn baby needs to be changed every 2 hours to avoid diaper rash or any other skin irritation. So, you would need 12 diapers per day.
I have shared my personal experience of using both disposable and cloth diapers. Read this post for more information - Successful Diaper-Free Baby - How to Potty-Train Them Early
ii) Waterproof Baby Bed Protector Dry Sheet - I bought these in two sizes (X-large and small). One for the master bedroom as we co-sleep with our baby and another one in small size to carry along as well as to use while changing the newborn.
iii) Unscented Baby Wipes or reusable cotton washcloths for cleaning baby’s bottom - I tried both. When traveling I carry disposable baby wipes and when at home I use reusable soft washcloths (dipped in warm water).
Our pediatrician was strictly against the use of wet wipes for their alcohol and fragrance content. She said these could lead to skin irritation or rashes. Hence, user discretion is advised. Check with your doctor and decide what works best for you and your baby.
iv) Baby Wearing for Newborn Babies - Our child initially fought and cried to get into the carrier but sooner than later he got used to the fact that it actually helped him be closer to his mother and calmed himself down immediately.
It is a great way to bond and works best for both mother and baby. It's also a better way to carry your newborn when outside and helps avoid others touching or picking your baby.
v) Baby Car Seat - Look for the ones that are safety certified and approved for child protection. In India, there is no mandatory law to use a baby car seat but using one goes a long way to ensure the safety of your child and your own self not getting distracted while driving.
vi) Bath Essentials - Baby massage oil, tub, soap or body wash, finger brush, shampoo, bath-friendly toys, soft-hooded towels, swaddles, and small washcloths. Get washcloths in different colors (set of three - for bathing, for cleaning baby bottoms, and as bibs for wiping drool or when baby burps and spits up).
vii) First Aid Kit for baby - Do consult and check with your baby's doctor first to know what all you can add to this kit. The basic ones like a digital thermometer, a baby nail clipper, pacifiers, teethers, nasal aspirator, medicine dropper, sanitizer, mosquito repellent roll-on, ice pack (when your baby falls or gets hurt), rash cream, antiseptic cream, band-aids, cotton balls, etc are fine. But medicines for a cough or cold, fever, etc. should be consulted with a doctor.
viii) Books - What? Sharon, you added books to this top 10 list that too for a newborn baby. Are you nuts? Well, hear me out. Okay!
Before babies are capable of seeing colors clearly, they seem to respond well to strong contrast like black and white colors. Which makes black and white books, or touch and feel interactive baby books the perfect first book for young, developing minds as it helps stimulate development in the retina and the optic nerve.
So, go for it. Also for a detailed list of books for babies and toddlers do check out my post on 5 Benefits and Importance of Reading to Your Children
ix) A Portable Potty - Potty-train your little one early. As parents learning your baby's signs to pee and poop can be a great way to start this journey. Understand your infant's EC signs - Elimination Communication signs like - making faces, crying, grunting, turning slightly red, or farting.
I have shared all about this here - https://www.sharonjeffgeorge.com/post/successful-diaper-free-baby-how-to-potty-train-them-early
X) Stroller - Last but not least strollers. They can come in handy in general while moving around and also when dad is not comfortable with baby-wearing. The stroller I have has a seat recline option meaning it can act as a bed for the infant, as well as a seat for the toddler.
